How long has the center been in business?
Children's Academy has been serving families
of Powhatan and the surrounding areas since 1998.
What are your hours?
Our center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It
is our policy to close the center during times of inclement weather that cause severe road conditions that may hinder staff's
ability to come in, or in times of a power failure, no heat or water, etc. In the event that the center needs to close, parents
will be notified as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made for their child.
What is your holiday schedule?
We will be closed on the following days:
~ New Year's Day
~ Memorial Day
~ 4th of July
~ Labor Day
~ Thanksgiving (Thursday & Friday)
~ Christmas (Christmas Day will depend on where the holiday falls during
the week each year)
Is there a late pick up fee?
Failure to pick up your child by 6:30 p.m. will result in a charge of $1.00
per minute for the first 15 minutes. After the first 15 minutes, the charge increases to $5.00 per minute. The charges incurred
are payable to the Director at the time of pick up. This charge is per child, not per family. Continued late pick ups will
result in termination of enrollment or a large increase in the late pick up fee. Please be courtious-our teachers have families
too!
When is tuition due?
Tuition fees are due no later than 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday of each week. Tuition
not paid by this time will incur an additional late fee. Non-payment of fees will result in immediate termination at the end
of the week.
Do you encourage visits from parents?
Yes! Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., your child receives
age-appropriate activities in group time, music, art, science, stories, rest, self help skills, snacks and lunch, indoor and
outdoor play, large and small motor activities, games, and theme-based curriculum. Parents are encouraged to visit or stop
in to observe our program during these hours.
What do you expect from us as parents?
You are encouraged to be involved in your child's experiences at preschool.
If you or a family member have a special talent, hobby, or skill-let us know! We enjoy bringing these experiences into the
classroom for the children.
How many children do you care for?
We are licensed to care for 137 children at our center.
What ages are the children in your care?
Infant & Toddler: Ages 3 months to 2 years
Preschool: Ages 2 to 5 years
School Age: Ages 5 to 12 years
Do you accept children who require extra
support?
Yes. We believe in inclusion, and we value all children. However, we go
on a case-by-case situation. We want to be sure that we can provide the type of special care that the child may require.
What are the staff's credentials and
training?
Each member of our staff is carefully selected, trained, and evaluated.
Each staff member receives annual training hours and continuing education as required by the State of Virginia licensing rules.
We support the development of our staff and assist them in their progress.
Is your staff's pay and benefits comparable
to other childcare centers in the area?
Yes it is!
How long does the average staff member
stay at the center?
The average staff member (both full and part time) stays with us for approximately
3+ years.
Who do you screen your staff?
We do a criminal background check through the State of Virginia and Virginia
Department of Criminal Justice as well as reference checks.
Do you have a sign-in and sign-out sheet?
Are the doors secure so that strangers can't just walk in?
Our center doors are equipped with an electronic system that requires a
code in order to open the doors. Each family is assigned a unique code that must be entered in order to enter the building.
This unique code system automatically "signs" your child in and out.
Do you have a place for nursing moms
to visit and breastfeed?
Yes, and we encourage it if you're able.
